Midsummer at Rena River
This year we decided to celebrate midsummer weekend at Norway Rena River with Hanna. We took flight to Oslo at Thursday evening. Eugen and Morten picked us up from the airport and we started driving to the Rena river. We were there late at Thursday evening and just set up the camp. Later that night Jim joined our group.
Friday morning we started fishing from ”under the bridge”. Fishing was hard because of the weather. It was really windy day and we didn’t saw many rises. We had couple of baits with small streamers and nymphs. I got to offer small caddis fly to nice trout, but I screwed up! I thought that my fly is couple of meters in different direction when the fish rose again, but in fact it took my fly and I noticed that too late 😛 Fine situation anyway! Later I spotted really nice grayling very close to shore. I was behind the bushes and grayling was eating something under the rocks. I put small nymph on my leader and just dropped it on water. Grayling took it immediately. After short fight grayling was almost in my net when it just pulled away. It was really nice fish, definitely over 50 cm fish.
We were fishing couple of spots and weather changed worse. It started raining badly and wind didn’t stop. I had some bites and then I caught really nice Grayling with olive sculpin head streamer! Eugen had given me that sculpin head fly couple of minutes before. It’s really effective fly and works well at Rena river.
Moment later Eugen spotted rising fish close to the shore. He caught nice trout with #16 size dry fly.
Later me and Hanna both caught small trouts. Guys spotted some rising fish downstream but they were not lucky.
On Saturday Eugen and Morten went drift boating trip with Rena Fiskecamp. Weather was much better than on Friday, but it was still really windy. In the afternoon we found nice spot were fish started rising. Because of the wind it was hard to see those fish. Hanna caught two brown trout. Later on that evening I caught two nice graylings.
On Sunday we decamped and went fishing only for couple of hours. We were sitting on the river bank and trying to spot rises. We didn’t have so much time because our plane was leaving at evening.
Rena river is really nice and beautiful place. If you are lucky you can see really massive insect hatches and lots of fish rising! We will definitely come back some day! Special thanks to Rena Fiskecamp and our friends!
